Sherlock, the main protagonist, and Professor James Moriarty, one of the main antagonists, were both incredibly brilliant and lived with the understanding that life held no predetermined purpose. Sherlock created his own purpose in solving mysteries, whereas Moriarty failed to create a solid purpose and would be said to have gone â€Å"insane†. As a teenager, my purpose changes day to day. Sometimes I just want to fit in, or to get good grades, or to impress others with my speech, but these are not sustainable purposes. There comes a time in everyone’s life when they begin to accept â€Å"the conquistadors of the useless†, but rarely do we ever really accept it. We just fight it and avoid it with an even more sustainable purpose, one that can never truly be fulfilled. And there is not a thing wrong with that. There’s nothing waiting for me at the top, so I’ll just climb a more challenging rock face. Why? Because it gives me purpose. But why do I want purpose? Because it makes me happy. Using that statement many conclude happiness to be the meaning of life. Therefore, you live to be happy, but happiness is a way of life. Happiness is predetermined in the sense that you live, so why not be happy? It is very common, though, to create a purpose out of happiness. Buddhists, live not to be happy, but to be at peace, therefore being at peace is their way of life. Though, they too have the power to create purpose out of that. When you scale a rock face, and make it to the top, there’s nothing there. Lionel Terray, the great French climber called this phenomena The conquistadors of the useless. Sure, the outcome is useless, but it’s the journey that makes it all worthwhile. Sometimes we forget that. The meaning of life has been a subject discussed by humankind for countless generations: â€Å"why are we here? † â€Å"what is life all about? † â€Å"what is the point of existence? †. And answers range from achieving pure bliss, to 42. But what if there is no true meaning? As in rock climbing, you get to the end of your life and face â€Å"the conquistadors of the useless†, death, but does that mean you are not to live it? Does one simply not swim because there is no treasure chest at the bottom of the lagoon? Why not follow a rainbow, even if there’s no pot’o’gold at the end? Some religions would argue Heaven, where one rests in an eternal state of divine happiness. Though this perspective may eliminate â€Å"the conquistadors of the useless†, it also belittles the journey and the adventure, as life becomes a miniscule time frame compared to one’s upcoming eternity of pleasure. People tend to misinterpret and abuse the argument offered by ‘the conquistadors of the useless’, now more than ever as the phrase â€Å"YOLO†, or â€Å"You Only Live Once†, trends worldwide. Well, I only live once, and my journey is all that counts, so I can do whatever I want! I can live in the moment and simply disregard any consequences that may occur, right? Wrong. Life is an entire journey, and the longer you want it to last and stay enjoyable, the more careful you need to be. You only live once, so don’t screw it up. But wait! That’s it, isn’t it? The meaning of life is the journey, because the journey is all that counts. But, what does that mean, â€Å"the journey is all that counts†? Counts for what? Counts towards what? And again, we come up with nothing. So there’s no meaning of life, that doesn’t mean we can’t give it purpose. Human kind’s biggest fault is that we need purpose. In theory, every American citizen has an equal say in the political affairs of this county. By participating in politics, people air their voices and thereby contribute to nation through representatives, hence the term representative democracy. It may seem to be beyond argument that political participation is a key objective in all democratic institutions. However, there is room for legitimate disagreement about the health of our democracy, in regards to the extent of civic participation. This raises the important question of how much participation there actually is in the United States. How many Americans take part in activities such as voting, attending political meetings, joining political parties, or even discussing politics with their neighbors? The answer is surprisingly few for a country that prides itself on democracy. However, is thi s low level of participation hurting our nation? In some respects, Americans are as ambivalent about political participation as they are about democratic values. On the one hand, large numbers of Americans believe that the ordinary citizen should play a part in public affairs. On the other hand, relatively few Americans actually take the initiative do so. Americans often hypocritically express the view that they are obligated as citizens to engage in politics, even though they are not involved in any real form of political activity. This view suggests that Americans tend to be more passive than active political participants. Active participation includes attending political rallies, meetings, and fundraisers, trying to influence government, joining interest groups, and of course voting. And this brings us to the controversial topic of voter turn out in the United States. According to one common view, the quality of democracy depends upon the extent to which voters use their rights to vote and to take part in public life. It is healthy if memberships of political parties are large and active, and if attendance at political rallies is high, and so on. People in Jesus time most certainly had different understandings of who Jesus was, for example that He became the Son of God when God adopted Him at His baptism (Marks view perhaps? Or that He became the Son of God when He was born of a virgin (which is when He came into existence, according to Luke). Jesus as liar is harder to establish because if when Jesus made his claims he knew that he was not God, then he was lying and deliberately deceiving his followers. But, if he was a liar, then he was also a hypocrite because he taught others to be honest at whatever cost. 1 Reading the book has given me a new insight into his life and the way that he has affected the lives of the author, his son and the people who were utilize in the writing of this book. But Jesus never displays inappropriate emotions. Jesus dc get angry in the temple when he saw the misuse of the temple courtyard and the moneychangers taking advantage of the poor. In fact, Jesus seems his most composed when being challenged. All and all, I just dont see signs that Jesus was suffering from any known mental illness. 2 From a logical standpoint, it is my opinion that insanity is not a valid argument. In the boo the authors point to several psychiatrists who disagree that Jesus could hoax been insane based on knowledge we have in this day and age. In light of other things we know about Jesus, its hard to imagine that he was mentally disturbed, 3 according to psychiatrists Arthur Noses and Lawrence Kola from their textbook, Modern Clinical Psychiatry. Again, insanity is not a logical conclusion. It just does not make sense. Jesus spoke some of the most profound words ever spoken and they were recorded by numerous people during his time and after as well as the prophec ies before and all have endured for 2000+ years. 3 In this chapter about Jesus being Lord, Liar or Lunatic, it is interesting to me to think about these things. The answers they received were interesting because they said that overwhelmingly the question of liar and lunatic came back with an astounding, No! The question Of Lord however, was met with a confusing, Absolutely not! My question is, how can the answer to Lord be Absolutely Not! when the question of Liar and Lunatic is definite No! ? It is illogical to make these two statements. Sean and Josh McDowell point out that it was not just rabble of Jesus time hat had the opinion that Jesus was indeed Lord. It was the educated people, the non-believers and the Council of Niece, as well as the anti-Nice members who considered Jesus as Divine. According to the book, it was common thought that Jesus was and is Divine. Igniting of Antioch was quote as saying God incarnate God himself appearing in the form of man. 5 And Urinates, the Father is God and the Son is God; for He who is born of God is God. 6 In an interview with DRP. D. A.
